Yesterday, I had the honor of joining PayPal’s Chief Legal Officer, Louise Pentland, at the National Legal Aid & Defender Association (NLADA) 2016 Exemplar Award Dinner. It should come as no surprise to anyone who knows Louise that she is one of only two honorees recognized for outstanding leadership, vision, dedication and achievement in promoting and supporting equal justice.

Louise has only been at PayPal for 18 months, and I can already attest to the power of her contributions.  The digital payments industry is an incredibly fast moving, highly regulated space and requires an exceptionally smart, savvy leader to navigate a constantly changing landscape. When I interviewed Louise, I knew quickly that she could help PayPal extend our industry leadership, but I also recognized that Louise was someone I could partner with to cultivate a culture that would embrace, embody and help drive our mission forward.

During last night’s dinner, Louise told the story of when she met Haydee, one of the tens of thousands of unaccompanied minors who came to the U.S. during the immigration crisis in Central and South America. The experience left Louise determined to focus her knowledge and expertise on immigration to help drive change. 

Louise joined PayPal because she wanted to work for a company that had a strong set of values. This is what also what drew me to PayPal, and what gets me excited to come to work every day. PayPal has a very unique opportunity to make a massive difference in people’s everyday lives by democratizing financial services and helping millions of people around the world, move and manage their money more securely, reliably and affordably than ever before.

Louise channeled her vision of the company’s mission to set up a unique, global pro-bono program which ensures that the legal team, and anyone else who wants to help, has time to spend working with organizations like Community Legal Services in East Palo Alto. The team works on issues of immigration, housing and economic advancement and in turn furthers PayPal’s mission of helping the underserved.

Helping people use our platform to improve their financial health is not just our greatest opportunity – I would argue it’s our responsibility. 

And Louise is a great ambassador for that mission. I’m thrilled to congratulate Louise on her many accomplishments and want to personally thank her for her commitment to acting on our values to truly make a difference in the world.
