Industry does it a lot. What do you think happens with many of the layoffs in tech industries? They still get paid for usually 90 days.

While wasteful, this is squarely on Elon Musk and DOGE. These employees have some level of protection, unlike Twitter where Elon Musk did this tactic before.

I think the headline is misleading. This is a buyout similar to what many corporations do to reduce headcount. It sounds to me like severance - which often amounts to several months for professional jobs.

Pamela, I saw headcount reductions regularly in industry…. I’ve been going to local going away parties at JSC where headcount reductions among the civil servants have been rarer…. From my cheap seats, the extended time serves for people to adapt, make life changes, and land on their feet….. ??????
