HOW? Our patented approach is both simple and technically elegant – reflect sunlight off the young arctic ice to allow its growth into multi-year, high-albedo ice. This will both slow the melt & the current flush of ice through the rotation of the Northern Atlantic Gyre past Greenland.
WHY? Arctic Ocean ice melt currently contributes up to 33% of global warming. We’re losing Arctic ice at an alarming speed – 13.3% per decade – at this rate, it’s possible the Arctic will be ice-free by 2030.

WHERE? After years of testing materials & application options in frozen ponds & lakes across N. America, we are actively pursuing materials and required permits to deploy at scale. We’re currently gathering ice preservation data in Barrow, AK, and planning final tests & refinement in the Hudson Bay next year. Our end goal is a very specific, targeted deployment off the coast of Greenland in the Fram Strait.
WHO? Founded by Leslie Field, who holds a B.S. and M.S. in Chemical Engineering from M.I.T. and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from U.C. Berkeley, + over 50 US patents. Leslie’s bootstrapped our operations since inception through donations from friends, family, and concerned individuals + more recently foundations. Ice911 has handful of full-time employees and a dedicated team of contractors, volunteers & partners.
