Each May, students in the Moody College photojournalism study abroad program set out to Ireland with the goal of producing a tactile, visual dispatch in the form of a zine—a self-published, DIY magazine. Students get the opportunity to seek out stories highlighting social issues, while learning the technical aspects of photojournalism and the connective power of storytelling. Last month I spent the day in Kerrville at the James Avery Artisan Jewelry factory with CEO (and Longhorn) John McCullough. There are so many cool memories of that day that I can share, but after the floods, this one stands out. As John took us station to station ...I was honestly a little taken back with how many people's hands are involved in the process of making a single charm, bracelet or necklace. Towards the end of the tour we met a woman who works to restore jewelry. Jewelry destroyed, damaged or simply worn down after years and years of daily wear. She was filled with pride as she showed us pieces she was able to return to life and return to the owner or owner's loved ones. When I read the Texas Monthly article last week labeling James Avery charms as "symbols of grief and resilience," I thought about her and wondered what she was working on today. As a Texas girl it should be no surprise that I have more than a few pieces from James Avery I have collected since I was a little girl. All I can say is ... it is a pretty special place with pretty special people, and if you ordered their Deep in the Heart of Texas charm that supports flood victims ... wear it proudly. Thanks John for showing us what y'all are all about and proud to call you a Longhorn. **On a lighter note, for the team restoring jewelry - their reference for what the piece originally looked like was a massive binder of printed photos in plastic sleeves representing the entire James Avery inventory of current and retired pieces. The binder is big y'all ... and exactly what I expected and loved to see.
