Operation Smile is proud to support the Ministry Of Health, Ghana, alongside Mercy Ships, as they host the First National Surgical Dialogue in Koforidua, Eastern Region, from 14th to 15th August 2025. This landmark event will bring together key stakeholders, development partners and surgical teams from regional and district levels to discuss the implementation of Ghana’s National Surgical, Obstetric, and Anaesthesia Plan (NSOAP), which was launched in September of 2024. The dialogue will focus on expanding access to safe surgical, obstetric, trauma, and anesthesia (SOTA) care and ensuring the sustainable financing of #SOTA services across the country. We’re honored to have collaborated with the Ministry of Health in developing the #NSOAP and remain committed to supporting its implementation nationwide. After months of renovation and preparation, we’re excited to share a major milestone in our journey to expand #cleftcare in Northern Ethiopia. Operation Smile Ethiopia, in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Health Ethiopia, Tigray Regional Health Bureau and Ayder Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, has officially launched the newly renovated Ayder Cleft Care Center, which hosted its first surgical program last month. During this program, more than 55 local and international volunteers came together to provide life-changing cleft surgeries. Medical staff and teams also took part in hands-on training sessions focused on cleft care standards, pathways and protocols. This was all supported by the center's three new fully equipped operating rooms, dedicated recovery and inpatient wards, expanded medical storage and integrated comprehensive cleft services, including nutrition, speech therapy, dental care and psychosocial support. By strengthening local infrastructure and training health professionals, we're bringing high-quality care closer to the patients and communities who need it most. With support from the Ministry of Health and Mekelle University, the center will serve more than 10 million people across Tigray, Northern Amhara, Northern Afar and Eritrean refugee communities. #OperationSmile #HealthforAll #GlobalHealth

Saber is a post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) nurse and educator who volunteers with Operation Smile. While he provides care to patients as they wake from surgery, his impact reaches far beyond the recovery room.
